1st Reading Bonanza in the Park May 14, 2011

  • 175 kids registered
  • 300+ in attendance from the East Palo Alto and neighboring communities
  • Over 60 organizations & businesses volunteered and donated to the event
  • 80+ volunteers from the Stanford alumni and East Palo Alto community
  • 1,000+ books given out to the community
  • Dozens of FREE prizes were given to kids and families for participating in activities

Results:

  • Over 70 Youth autobiography stories were written
  • Kids shared poems they wrote and acted out stories on the stage
  • 37 families signed up for 10 Books A Home
  • Families had an increased awareness of reading resources

*The success of this event led to the Oscar Grant Foundation hosting a Reading Bonanza in the Park, Oakland on September 17th, 2011*

 

2nd Reading (formerly Rainbow) Bonanza in the Park 

Results

  • 225 kids registered at the check-in booths
  • 400+ in attendance
  • Thousands of books were given out to the community
  • First Ever Bar Up & Spell It Out contest – rhyme-forming and Spelling Bee contest
  • 100+ Volunteers
  • 20+ Community Organizations hosting literacy activities
  • Dozens of FREE prizes were given to kids & families for participating in activities, including 3 laptops and desktop computer
  • Free Snacks and drinks given out all day

 

3rd Reading (formerly Rainbow) Bonanza in the Park

 

Results

  • 300 kids registered at the check-in booths
  • 600+ in attendance
  • 2,000+ books were given out to the community
  • 150+ Volunteers
  • 30+ Community Organizations hosting literacy activities
  • Dozens of FREE prizes were given to kids & families for participating in activities, including 4 Mac laptops
  • Free food and drinks given out all day
  • 2nd annual “Spell It Out” spelling bee contest

 

4th Reading (formerly Rainbow) Bonanza in the Park

Results

  • 320 kids registered at the check-in booths
  • 600+ in attendance
  • 4,000+ FREE books were given out to the community
  • 150+ Volunteers
  • 35 Community Organizations hosting literacy activities
  • Dozens of FREE prizes were given to kids & families for participating in activities, including 4 Mac laptops
  • Free food and drinks given out all day
  • 3rd annual “Spell It Out” spelling bee contest – winners won Mac laptops
